Awareness, standpoint, and inclinations towards human papilloma virus vaccination among University of Jordan Medical Students: a cross-sectional study

ABSTRACT
Introduction:
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant risk factor for the development of cervical malignancy. The overall death toll due to cervical carcinoma is remarkable. The HPV vaccine is a well-known primary preventive measure for HPV infections, but it has not yet been introduced in Jordan.

Aim of the research:
The study aims to examine the point of view of medical students at the University of Jordan who want to be vaccinated against HPV infection.

Material and methods:
This cross-sectional survey was carried out between August 2023 and April 2024, during which time 327 participants who were senior students at the School of Medicine of the University of Jordan were interviewed using a validated and structured questionnaire.

Results:
Over 96% of the students were aware of cervical cancer and HPV, but only 89% knew about the HPV vaccine and its safety before participating in the study. The students showed highly favourable attitudes toward the HPV vaccine, with an acceptance rate of 84.1%. Nevertheless, some students were willing to be vaccinated but were unaware of the vaccine. However, the high cost and insufficient dissemination of HPV-related information were significant obstacles to vaccine uptake in Jordan. Most participants were female (202), while 125 were male.

Conclusions:
Medical students’ knowledge about the HPV vaccine was high, and they had good attitudes, which are vital in recommending the vaccine and subsequent uptake, considering the health advocate’s weakness through the media.
